Water, Hygiene and Sanitation Projects

help us to get safe and clean water
In Kilimanjaro
Region water plays an essential role in poverty alleviation as it enhances food
security, domestic hygiene security and the sustenance of ecosystems.
Availability of water of good quality reduces time spent on fetching water, a
burden especially for women and children. Furthermore it reduces the excessive
use of contaminated water, which leads to water-borne diseases such as diarrhea
and cholera in Same and Mwanga districts almost every year.
Until now, KIHO has concentrated on awareness creation concerning the sustainable use of every drop of water that is obtained for domestic uses. Emphasis is put on the multiple uses of “grey water”, which has been used for washing green vegetables, clothes or the utensils after a meal. KIHO educates families on how they can make further use of this water for growing green vegetables and shows them how to construct simple kitchen gardens. These are policies that can be realized without spending any money, but nevertheless improve living conditions.
Furthermore KIHO coordinates the planning of Integrated Water Resource Management Projects, such as the installation of affordable and eco-friendly latrines, the digging of deep bore holes or the construction of accessible shallow wells. In order to raise funds for these more expensive projects we write proposals and search for potential partners or funding agencies.
